DEFINITION:

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is defined as elevated blood pressure. The Joint National Commision 7 Guidelines for hypertension define elevated blood pressure as follows:

  • Pre hypertension >130/80 mm Hg
  • Stage 1 hypertension >140/90 mm Hg
  • Stage 2 hypertension: >160/90 mmHg

Why is it important to me?

Elevations in blood pressure are known risk factors for heart disease including heart attacks, brain disease including strokes, and kidney disease that can result in kidney failure. Many other organs in your body can be affected by elevated blood pressures.

How do I treat it?

To begin with a low salt diet <2 grams, exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation may help naturally decrease your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is not at goal your doctor will determine the right medication for you depending on your medical condition.
