Houston, Texas – University General Hospital Cardiologist, and Houston Rockets partner, Dr. Asif Ali will be a featured speaker at the Texas Seniors Expo at the GRB Convention Center on Saturday, January 26, 2013. He will speak about cardiovascular wellness. Dr. Ali is an international speaker on cardiovascular prevention, book author, and has appeared on the nationally syndicated “Dr. Oz” television program, local 2, Fox, channel 8, and AM radio.  He will be given a special introduction by seven-time NBA Champion and Founder of the Robert Horry Center for Sports & Physical Rehabilitation, Robert Horry.

The Texas Seniors Expo will feature more than fifty exhibitors and connect seniors and caregivers with organizations that can make their lives better. UTSD students joined other volunteers at a joint UTHealth/Houston Rockets Health Fair earlier this fall. They were invited by Dr. Asif Ali, clinical assistant professor with UTHealth.

Two University of Texas School of Dentistry organizations – the Hispanic Student Dental Association and the Asian American Student Dental Association – joined forces to help with a health fair sponsored by UT Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and the Houston Rockets in September at Toyota Center, providing oral hygiene instructions, oral screenings and distributing toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to the approximately 100 children who participated. UTSD students also provided information about affordable dental care to the parents of the children being screened.

Drs. Graciela Hernandez and Lisa Tran supervised the student volunteers, who included Ricardo Munoz, Huyen-Tran Tran, Liana Tam, Lily Nguyen, Nina Tran, Nhung Pham, Bichvan Nguyen, Fouzia Mohammad, Cynthia Corral, Jennifer Miller, Jenny Crow, Jacky Flores, Faryn Vela, Bien Dang and Joe Holland. 

The health fair also provided other types of health screenings, nutritional and safety information, fitness instructions, school immunizations, school supplies and information about social service resources. Working with UTSD’s community partners, economically challenged families were pre-selected and invited to attend in an effort to find children who would benefit from the event.

HSDA Community Service Officer Ricardo Munoz said it was time well spent.

“I believe prevention is the best way of providing dental care, and events like these are a great way of getting important information to parents of young children,” he said. “The HSDA is proud to be an active part of the community and will continue to find ways to provide information and care to the underserved population of Houston. Volunteering in this event was a very rewarding experience for me.”

The Houston Rockets will host the first Rockets Dribble-A-Thon event at Toyota Center prior to the Rockets vs. Cavaliers Kids Day game on Dec. 11, 2010. Dribble-A-Thon invites kids to raise money for HEARTS by collecting pledges to dribble a basketball at Toyota Center during the two and a half hour event. Estimated start time is 12:30pm.

The beneficiary of the event is Houston Early Age Risk Testing and Screening (HEARTS), a program designed to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in teens through early detection.

HEARTS Day Proclamation

HEARTS™ , which stands for Houston Early Age Risk Testing and Screening,  is a collaborative effort with the Houston Rockets, Memorial Hermann Hospital, and University of Texas Medical School to help screen and save adolescent lives from sudden cardiac death (SCD) in HISD. We would like to extend an invitation for you to join us at the official launch and press event of the HEARTS screenings beginning this Fall at Hogg Middle School.  During this press event, scheduled for September 23 at 10 AM, we plan to make a commitment via the media to spreading awareness of the undiagnosed cardiac abnormalities found in young children.

Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) claims the lives of over 450,000 Americans each year* and is the #1 killer in young athletes in the U.S.  SCD can result in the death of individuals who may or may not know of any pre-existing heart conditions. SCD often occurs in active, seemingly healthy people with no known heart disease or other health problems.  Fortunately, lives can be saved with early detection.

The four-step program includes a self-administered questionnaire, cardiovascular physical exam, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound) of sixth-grade students to detect potential heart problems.

Families from underserved communities received complimentary optical and dental checkups, heart screenings and flu shots, as well as nutritional information and healthy snacks. In addition, all children received a Rockets backpack and school supplies. 
Houston cardiologist and Rockets HEARTS partner, Dr. Asif Ali spearheaded efforts to rally the support of more than 60 medical volunteers, in addition Rockets employees who donated their time as well.
